Basketball Clinics by Coach Al

The Portugal Basketball Festival provides learning and development opportunities for all participants. In 2022 we had the pleasure and honour to count on Coach Al's participation.

Coach Al Schaffer has been coaching basketball and organizing clinics for over 45 years. His background includes coaching championship high school teams in Michigan & California and also directing basketball camps & clinics across the U.S. Since 2010 he has been a volunteer coach with the San Diego State University Aztecs basketball team and worked with players that include Kahwi Leonard (LA Clippers), Jalen McDaniels (Charlotte Hornets), & Malachi Flynn (Toronto Raptors). Coach Al’s honors include induction into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Fame and Michigan’s nominee for National Coach of the Year. In addition to coaching, Coach Al enjoys traveling, hiking, & visiting family, including sons Jeff & Kirk. He has walked the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route several times with his daughter Amanda. For the past three years he has served as the Honorary Chairperson for fundraising walks with The ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter.

At the Portugal Basketball Festival 2022, coach Al provided basketball clinics to coaches and players adressing subjects such as Shooting FUNdamentals, and Individual & Team Defense. Coach Al Clinics were organized within the American Sports Summit 2022:
